This passage of Scripture, probably more than any other, inspired George Frideric Handel to write the musical, “Messiah”, in 1741. In my opinion, the majesty of the music is unsurpassed. It just would not seem like Christmas without it.
The Message of Christmas contains transformative power for individuals and nations! (Isa. 9:1-5). Notice these references: (1) regions such as Zebulun and Naphtali would go from contempt to glory. They would be renamed ‘Galilee of the Gentiles’. This, of course would become the headquarters for the ministry of Jesus. Gentiles, once held in contempt, would come into glory through the ministry of Messiah Jesus who would fulfill the Abrahamic Covenant to bless all the nations of the earth. (2) the people who walked in darkness in a dark land would now have light shine upon them and they would experience gladness as they encountered the presence of God in Christ! (3) the people would be delivered from all oppression and be victorious over their enemies like in Gideon’s day when he defeated the Midianites.
The Miracle of Christmas is expressed in Isa. 9:6. The Incarnation is about the Eternal Son of God coming in a human flesh body. The Father gave His Son and the Son obediently came as a human child through the womb of the virgin (see Isa. 7:14). This miracle is surely a mystery: Jesus of Nazareth, fully God and fully man! Upon Him, the government of God’s Kingdom rests forever! The King and His Kingdom provide the following: (1) wonderful counsel; (2) the strength of God’s might; (3) a relationship with Father God and His Son; and (4) peace which is from the word, ‘shalom’, which means well-being—nothing missing and nothing lacking.
The Mission of Christmas in history is to establish and uphold the government of God (the Kingdom) in the earth with justice and righteousness from the time of Christ’s enthronement on the throne of David, which according to Acts 2 is the day of Pentecost, until forevermore! The amazing news is that the zeal of the Lord of hosts never fails to accomplish His will in history upon the earth! (Isa. 9:7).
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM DAWN, JEAN, AND ME
